Bio

Hi, I’m Ms. Wendy! I am a Speech-Language Pathologist here at ASPIRA. I get to work with students of all ages to support growth in communication skills.

The SPEECH in Speech-Language Therapy includes speech sound production (articulation), voice, speech fluency (stuttering), overall speech intelligibility. If you have a hard time being understood when you talk – I can help!

The LANGUAGE in Speech-Language Therapy includes vocabulary, grammar, comprehension, language processing, language memory, expressing thoughts/ideas/knowledge, asking and answering questions, retelling/summarizing information, rhyming, phonological awareness, phonological processing, understanding and use of social language (social skills), language organization, and many more areas of communication!

WHEW - That is a lot of things I can help students with!

My path to Speech-Language Pathology was a winding one. I left high school early to go to college for Historic Preservation at Savannah College of Art and Design and ended up completing my Bachelor of Art degree in English with a concentration in Film from the University of Delaware. After a few more twists and turns, I met a few kids who used speech generating devices to communicate (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) and knew that Speech-Language Therapy was going to be my passion! I received my Master of Science degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders with a concentration in Augmentative and Alternative Communication from the Pennsylvania State University. I was a recipient of a Federal Training Grant that allowed me to participate in research designed to maximizing language development for young children who require AAC while in grad school. Since becoming a Speech-Language Pathologist, I have had the privilege of working with preschoolers through high school students with extremely varied needs. One of my favorite professional experiences was working at HMS School for Children with Cerebral Palsy. The students there taught me about power of communication and the importance of making learning fun.

I am originally from Newark, DE but have also lived in Maryland, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and even Vermont (my favorite) for a few summers. I am a huge animal lover and have two super fluffy dogs and two very opinionated cats. I cannot remember a time that I was not interested in and inspired by art. From arc welding to weaving to graphic design, I love creating! I enjoy playing games and am addicted to watching movies. But my all-time favorite thing (other than chocolate) is helping others.
