Welcome to Middle School Health

Hello! My name is Julia Fornoff. I teach health to grades 6-8th. This is my 4th year with ASPIRA. In addition to teaching health, I also coach field hockey, softball, and work in the aftercare/summer camp program! In the past, I've also taught elementary PE and health. While I miss seeing my little nuggets every day, I really enjoy the content and conversation MS health allows me to have with the students.
Teaching was not my first profession, however. For many years, I used my Exercise Physiology degree working as a personal wellness coach to help many adults and teens train athletically. Conditioning and weight lifting are a personal passion of mine. If you have any exercise or nutrition question, please don't hesitate to ask!
I have an almost 20 year-old son, who also works in the aftercare/summer camp program, named Mr. Tyler. He attends UD and is hoping to become a teacher one day. Once an Asparante, always an Asparante! #familyfirst #wolfpackpride #ASPIRAlove
 6th Grade Health Topics:
  • 35 hours of health class, meeting one time each week, for the whole year.
  • 15 hours of drug & alcohol content
  • At this level, there is one main project we work on to understand the body systems and how they work. This sets the foundation for understanding how to keep our bodies healthy and safe. This project is completed during the 2nd trimester.
  • In the late spring, we have our family life & sexuality conversations. In 5th grade, boys and girls are separated. In 6th grade, the classes remain together & review the content taught in 5th grade.
  • Other large topics of conversations: Tobacco & vaping, injury prevention (with talks from Christiana Care), nutrition & physical activity, introduction to mental health, alcohol prevention
7th & 8th Grade Health Topics:
  • 30 hours of health class, meeting one time each week, for the whole year.
  • 15 hours of drug & alcohol content - separate from required health content
  • In 7th grade we spend trimester two researching and presenting reports on common drugs, focusing safety and prevention of drug and alcohol abuse. In 8th grade, we begin diving into building health relationships, mental health challenges, and personal health & wellness.
  • 8th grade has a 10 week STD prevention presentation partnered with Christiana Care. 7th grade covers making health and safe choices for family planning and sexuality.
  • Other large topics of conversation: drugs & alcohol, injury prevention (with talks from Christiana Care), nutrition and physical activity, community & environmental health.
Beginning in Jan. 2020, all health classes at ASPIRA teach a 5-6 week abuse prevention program as mandated by the State of Delaware. We follow curriculum designed by Safer, Smarter Kids. Information is available upon request!
