ABOUT THE TEACHER
My name is Ms. Heather Heacock. I am the elementary and middle school Band Director as well as a co-director of the ASPIRA Musical. This is my 3rd year at ASPIRA and my 4th year of teaching. I graduated in 2016 with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education (K-12) from the University of Delaware. I have been playing clarinet since I was in 5th grade and love sharing my passion for music with my students. This year I am also the Adviser for our Middle School National Junior Honors Society. Outside of school I enjoy hiking, cooking, running and spending time with my family and friends. Please feel free to contact me via Remind or via email at [email protected]

Spread Music...Not Germs!!

Here are some things you can be doing while you are home:

  1. Practice the parts you already know
  2. Look ahead into the new sections; circle the things that are unfamiliar to you.
  3. Listen to the recordings of the songs and follow along with your part
  4. Speed up the parts you already know. Can you play along with the recording?
  5. Learn a new scale. (What’s that note again)
  6. Look up a pop song and try to learn it
  7. Perform for your family
  8. Don't stop making music

REHEARSALS, LESSONS & PARTICIPATION

All 4th and 5th grade students will have pull- out sectionals once a week. Beginning students will be placed in a group together or with students who are at the same 1st year playing level. Some 4th grade students may have lessons with the beginning 5th grade students.

-Students are responsible for checking lesson times outside of the band room, in their hallway, or on the daily morning announcements.

-Missing lessons may result in a failing grade and removal from the band program.

-Regular practice at home is necessary to enhance the band experience and lead to the success of your child, as well as the band as a whole.

PRACTICING

Elementary students will have practice logs to contribute to our section of the month competition. Students should be practicing a MINIMUM of 3 days a week.

If students have practiced 3 days, they have the chance to earn 1 sticker toward their sections competition. At the end of the month the section with the most stickers will receive a small prize. The competition resets at the beginning of every month. Practice logs must be signed by parents each week in order to help students stay accountable.

PRACTICING
PRACTICE LOGS-GRADES

-In order to communicate with parents about homework, band students will be using a Practice Log to record their practice times for the week.

-Students are expected to practice at home to continue developing their instrumental skills. Practice is what we call our “homework” in band. The practice log will be part of your child’s grade in band class.

-Practice logs will be reviewed weekly during band class (EVERY WEDNESDAY). Students will be expected to practice for the following amounts of time, 6th grade 60 min/week, 7th grade 75 min/week, 8th grade 90 min/week.

-Students will also receive points for their parent signature, turning their log in on the first day of class and have NO 2 days in a row without practice. Any logs turned in later than one week will not be accepted. All practice times should be counted as homework practice, not band or in classroom practice!

-Practice logs will be strictly enforced and contribute to a large part of your middle school band grade. Absence of practice logs could result in failure of the course.
